Information for parents, guardians and carers

This is designed to prepare you and your child for his or her admission.

Please read it carefully and take note of the instructions.

It is very important that your child does not eat or drink for some hours before his or her operation.

If you have been asked to come at 7.30am:

  • Your child must not have anything to eat after 12 midnight on the day before admission.
  • Between 12 midnight and 6am your child may have clear fluid drinks only.
  • A clear fluid drink is one through which you can read a newspaper, such as water or weak squash, not milk, fruit juice or tea.
  • It is advisable to give your child a clear fluid drink at 6 am, but do not give more than 180 ml (six fluid ounces – a glassful).
  • You may be advised to give less than this.
  • Your child should have nothing further to drink after 6.30am.

If your child is an infant taking milk or formula feeds you may feed your child until 2 am.

  • Your child should not have any further milk or formula feeds after 2.30am but may have clear fluid drinks until 6.30am.
  • If your child is breast fed you can breast feed until 4.30 am if required then only give water until 6.30am.

It is very important that your child does not eat or drink for some hours before his or her operation.

If you have been asked to come in between 10 am and 12 noon:

  • Your child may have a light breakfast, such as a slice of toast or a bowl of cereal, at 7am.
  • Between 7 am and 11 am your child may have clear fluid drinks.

If your child is an infant taking milk or formula feeds you may feed your child until 7 am.

  • Your child should not have any further milk feeds after 7.30am but may have clear fluid drinks until 11.30am.
  • If your child is breast fed, feed until 9.00am if required then only water until 11.00am.

It is important that your child should take any regular medications, for example inhalers, at the usual time on the day of surgery.

Please bring your child’s regular medication to the ward.

A concessionary car parking ticket is available for £4.00 which will cover your visit. You will need to bring your pay and display ticket to the ward along with your car registration number (take a photo of it on your phone) and we will issue you with a permit.
